How to make Upma

Rava Upma is a very popular food from India. It’s a traditional food from the South Indin region. Upma is considered as the most popular, delicious, and easy to make breakfast in India.


  1. Semolina (Sooji) – 3 cups ( 1 cup = 200 g)
  2. Ghee or Cooking oil – 2 tsp
  3. Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
  4. Black gram (Urad Daal) – 1 tsp
  5. Cashew – ½ handful
  6. Onion – 1 pcs   
  7. Green Chilies – 3-4 pcs
  8. Ginger – 10 g
  9. Curry Leaves – ½  handful
  10. Green peas – ½ cup (100g)
  11. Salt – 1 tsp
  12. Sugar – 1 tsp
  13. Coriander – ½ handful


  1. Heat up a pan or kadhai over medium flame, add 1 cup of Semolina(Sooji), stir the Semolina until it becomes crisp and fragrant (Remember not to overcook or make it brown). Place it on a plate and keep it aside.
  2. Now again heat a pan or kadhai over medium flame, add 2 tsp ghee or cooking oil, add 1 tsp Mustard seed, add 1 tsp black gram (Urad dal), stir it well. It gives crackling sound when it’s fried well.
  3. Now add some cashew and fry it until it turns golden.
  4. Finely chop 1 onion and add it to the pan.
  5. Saute it until it is slightly cooked and soft. (remember to make it brown)
  6. Now chop some green chilies, ginger and curry leaves and add the pan.
  7. Add some green peas and cook until the raw aroma of peas.
  8. Stir it well for a minute or a half, then add 3 cups of water on it. Add salt and sugar as per your taste.
  9. Once the water comes to its boiling state, start adding roasted Semolina(Sooji) little by little with a spoon.
  10. After adding all the Semolina, stir it from sides and mix it well. Semolina will start to swell up by absorbing water.
  11. Leave it for 2 min in the lowest flame.
  12. Lastly, add some chopped coriander on top of upma.
  13. And it’s ready to serve.
